January 2022 kicks off Phase II of the Duxbury Docent Training Program!
We were tremendously excited to launch the training this weekend, but we woke to learn of the huge volcanic explosion in the South Pacific near Tonga causing tsunami warnings along the entire Pacific Coast! The event caused surges in the area starting at about 9:00 am at high tide, and also rippled through our plans for field training that day. We scrambled to understand the predicted magnitude, recommendations by agencies and closures of public beaches, and then transitioned to a virtual meeting instead. Luckily we were able to make contact with our trainees, who met us and each other on Zoom that afternoon. Thank you volunteers and instructors for pivoting so adeptly to accommodate the effects of Earth’s rumblings!
As we all introduced ourselves, we learned how lucky we are to have gathered such a fabulous group of interesting people who feel inspired to help protect Duxbury Reef’s marine life by educating visitors about rocky intertidal ecology, MPAs and tidepool stewardship and safety.
Though we missed the field portion of the training that day, we were glad to have had the opportunity to get to know each other a little bit. The connection will be important as we work together as a team to coordinate schedules and provide docenting services over the course of the coming months and beyond.
